It was senior night, and Southern Valley played host to Alma on Tuesday night. Just when you thought that the Eagles were going to sweep the Cardinals, Alma found another gear to take the final three sets and win the match, 3-2.
In set one, Southern Valley took the early 3-0 lead, but the Cardinals evened it up at 4-4 and took the 5-4 lead. Alma took the 7-4 lead, but the Eagles responded to take the 8-7 lead. Southern Valley extended their lead to 12-8 and forced Alma to call a timeout. The Cardinals came out of the timeout and were able to chip away at the deficit, 17-13, but Southern Valley secured the first set win, 25-18, to take a 1-0 lead over Alma.
In set two, Southern Valley again struck first as they took the 2-1 lead over Alma. After trading points and errors, the Cardinals took a 10-8 lead, but the Eagles were able to even it up at 12-12. Southern Valley took an 18-17 lead, but Alma evened it back up at 20-20. The two squads traded points again, but the Eagles took the second set, 25-22, and extended their lead to 2-0 over Alma.
In set three, Alma earned the first point, but the Eagles weren't going to let them create a gap as they tied it up at 2-2. Alma was able to stretch the lead to 11-,9 but Southern Valley answered and took the 15-13 lead. Alma tied it up at 16-16 and went on a run to force the Eagles to use a timeout at 21-17. The Cardinals stretched the lead to 24-18 and forced Southern Valley to use their final timeout. Alma took the third set 25-18 and made the match, 2-1.
In set four, Alma took the 2-1 lead, and the Eagles evened the set at 4-4. Alma took control of the set, extending their lead to 15-8 and forcing Southern Valley to use a timeout. Taylor Pool had some big blocks in the set to help shift the momentum in the direction of Alma. The Cardinals extended that lead to 20-10 and went on to win the fourth set, 25-16, and evened the match up at 2-2.
In the fifth and deciding set, Southern Valley took the 1-0 lead. There were four straight points that the two teams exchanged due to errors, tying things up at 5-5 and again at 7-7. Alma found a different gear and put their foot on the gas as they pulled away to a 12-8 lead, and Southern Valley called a timeout to try and slow them down. The Cardinals were too much, though, as they were able to take the fifth set 15-9 and pull off the reverse sweep to win the match, 3-2.
