RPAC Rundown Featured Matchup Preview: Maywood-Hayes Center at Sutherland

We are back at it this week with High School Football action. We have three games this week, and our first one is on Friday, August 28th in Sutherland at 7:00 P.M. CT.
We begin with the road team, Maywood-Hayes Center. They went 1-7 last season and will be under the direction of a new head coach, Thad Rathjen. Rathjen was an assistant last year. This team returns some key players, including seniors OL/DL Cooper Soundy, TE/DL Oliver Anders, QB/LB Kade Broz, and sophomore RB/DB Bentley Broz.

In 2025, they averaged 145 rushing yards per game and about 47 passing yards per game. I'd think it is safe to say this team will be improved. We will see if they can stop teams at a higher level on defense. They have the athletes to do it.
The Wolves are in the D2-6 District with Hemingford, Hi-Line, Hitchcock County, North Platte St. Pat's, and Perkins County.
Now for Sutherland. They are in a very similar situation to the MHC Wolves. They went 1-7 last year and have a new head coach, Dan Wolken. Wolken has been an assistant in years past and has a lot of coaching experience.
The Sailors graduated a number of key players, but do return some experience. As a team, they averaged 44 yards passing and 159 yards rushing.

Wolken mentioned seniors Jack Wallace, Zayne Green, Kale Martinez, Tristan Woolf, Teagan Fitzpatrick, and Keigan Kershner as potential key contributors.
Sutherland is in the D3-7 District with Bayard, Dundy County Stratton, Hyannis, and Wauneta-Palisade.
My overall assessment: a ton of unknowns from both teams. We will see how things go on Friday evening.
