RPAC Rundown Spotlight Series: Wallace Wildcat Micah Garrison's Steady Improvements on the Course

Golf has become one of my favorite sports to cover. It is a hard, hard sport. From figuring out how to swing a golf club, to putting, chipping, understanding how to play based on weather, and much more, it's so difficult. Oh, and also, there's a huge mental part to the game.

In the last four years, the RPAC has had a number of great golfers, including a graduating class of 2026 that left an incredible mark.

We still have some really solid golfers returning for the RPAC. One that we saw grow this past season as a player was junior, now senior, Micah Garrison of Wallace. He took home medals in the regular season and was consistent. At state, he found himself in the mix for a medal, finishing 19th in Class D.

He also finished 5th at the RPAC Invite, the highest returning RPAC medalist at the invite.

So I wanted to find out more about Micah's beginnings in golf, what he enjoys about it, and his improvements on the course.

"Well, I like golf because like anyone can play it and anyone can play at any level. Like, you know, in baseball, you're not gonna throw a hundred miles an hour. But in golf, you can hit a tour-level shot at any moment, said Garrison.

And Micah didn't start golfing until he was a freshman, and his grandpa was an influence. "Well, in the summer going into my freshman year, my grandpa had some clubs in his basement. So I just grabbed them, went out in his backyard, and I was just hitting. And that was really fun. So we...got some clubs...and just hit my backyard for a bit, and finally got on the course, and that's when I fell in love with the game. It was really fun."

As mentioned, Garrison made big strides in his game from his sophomore season to his junior year. He credits working on the short game.

"Definitely more short game. Like 50 yards in, it got so much better. I mean, I was getting up and down more, and I was, you know, those longer putts, I was two-putting way more. And just around the greens got way better touch," said Garrison.

"And I also thought the game better too. It wasn't taking bad strokes or making...mistakes. I was just playing smart golf...just like knowing when to be aggressive and when to hold back. You know, sometimes, you know, on some tough holes I would pull out driver, try and cut the edge, but you know, I wouldn't hit it great. So then, you know, I'm in trees, I'm in trouble, and then I'll just have a bad score. But...I just think, you know, when do I pull back and when do I go score?" added Garrison.

And naturally, Garrison has some big goals for 2027. "...my top goals...I wanna under average under eighty, you know, be more consistent with that scoring. And I really want to do really good in conference and districts. My conference and districts weren't that good this year. Like, I didn't shoot a really good score. So I'd really like to get that down and you know, handle the pressure of being in those situations better."
