Cambridge hosted Bertrand on Thursday night during Homecoming Week. Also, it was a pair of 3-0 teams battling in the opening week of district play. These squads compete in the D2-8 District. Cambridge, who is regarded as a top-10 in D2, took care of business, winning 56-6.

Cambridge got things started with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Micah Gerlach to Brady Ahlemeyer, and it was 6-0 at the 9:51 mark in the first. Following an interception by Sean Polly of Cambridge, the Trojans punched it in again, this time from four yards out on the ground by Ahlemeyer to make it 14-0 with 7:13 remaining in the first quarter.

Bertrand was able to move the ball well on possessions, but sputtered a little once getting to midfield.

At the 1:17 point in the first, Gerlach found Krayton Ruggles on a 13-yard pass to make it 20-0. That score carried into the second period.

With 9:37 in the second, Gerlach ran it in from 20 yards out, making it 28-0 after the conversion.

Bertrand answered back with a big-time play that was well executed by the Vikings as Waylon Olesen found Thunder Nelson on a route across the middle of the field, and Nelson took it 66 yards. It was 28-6 at that point.

Ahlemeyer scored again later in the quarter, with an 11-yard run, and Hodge Raburn had a beautiful toe tap catch in the deep left corner of the north endzone for the two-point conversion to make it 36-8

Cambridge scored once more on a four-yard touchdown run by Ruggles, and it was 42-6 going into halftime.

In the second half, Bertrand found success running the ball and moved well on a number of possessions.

Cambridge scored twice more: in the third quarter, a seven-yard touchdown run by Ruggles, and the other in the final stanza, a three-yard score by Gerlach.

We caught up with Micah Gerlach and Sean Polly after the game.
