Tryon and Arvdal Crowned State Champions, Five RPAC Wrestlers Take Home Medals

Wednesday, February 18th, was the final day for the NSAA Girls State Wrestling Championships. We entered the day with three RPAC wreslters gaurenteed a medal. We ended the day with five medals and two state champions. Let's dive into the recap.

At 100 pounds, Cali Santifer fell in the second round consolation match to McKenna Hernandez of Ord in 2:30. Santifer ended her season with a record of 20-13.
Also at 100 pounds, Capri Sayer of Southwest picked up a win in the second round consolation matches against Alexa Rogers of Adams Central via fall in 1:41. She advanced to the third round of the consolation matches. In that match, Sayer defeated Jenni Olson of Tri County Northeast by fall in 3:34. In her consolation semifinal match, Sayer lost to Azlynn Johnson of Stanton by major decision, 10-0. Sayer finished in 6th place as she lost to Brynlee Wells of Battle Creek in the 5th-place match by a 7-2 decision. She finished the season with a record of 45-7 and a medal as a sophomore.

At 110 pounds, Laney Becker picked up a win in her first round consolation match against Sadie Keogh of West Holt by fall in 0:21 to advance. In the second-round consolation matches, Becker fell to Ashlynn Dailey of Cedar Catholic at 4:27. Becker finished her season with a record of 35-9.
At 115 pounds, Alyssa Koch of Southwest started the day in the first round of the consolation matches and defeated Allie Oligmueller of West Holt by fall in 2:22 to advance to the second round. In the second round, Koch defeated Mailey Heckman of Loomis by fall in 0:50 to move on to the third round of consolation matches. In that third round match, Koch fell to Rhiannon Trump of Palmyra in 1:47. She ended her season with a record of 41-16.
At 115 pounds, Hayley Serfontein of Southern Valley/Arapahoe lost to Leynn Luna of Boone Central by fall in 1:42 during the semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, Serfontein bounced back to defeat Rhiannon Tramp of Palmyra by a 5-1 decision to advance to the 3rd and 4th place match. In that match, Serfontein lost to Brinkley Last of Battle Creek by a 1-0 decision. Serfontein placed 4th and ended the season with a record of 36-3.

At 120 pounds, Ceann McIntosh of Maxwell started the day in the first round consolation matches and lost to Sofie Lewis of Arlington by major decision, 13-0. McIntosh ends her season with a record of 28-9.
At 190 pounds, Skylar Johnson of Paxton picked up a win in the second round consolation match by fall in 0:41 over Ana Aguirre Flores of West Point-Beemer. In the third round consolation matches, Johnson fell to Lainey Abell of Centennial in 0:54 to move to the 5th and 6th place match. In that match, Johnson defeated Keleigh Gonzalez of Central City by fall in 0:22, placing 5th. She ended her season with a record of 42-14.

At 235 pounds, Elena Lee of Southern Valley/Arapahoe started the day in the first round consolation matches and defeated Honey Luby Bartling of Summerland by fall in 1:37 to advance to the second round consolation matches. In the second round, Lee faced Carleigh Jackson of West Holt and fell in 1:57. Lee ended the season with a record of 17-18.
At 190 pounds, Addison Arvdal of Sutherland faced Lainey Abell of Centennial in the semifinal match. She won via tech fall to advance to the championship match for the second straight year. In a rematch from last year's championship match, Arvdal faced Ida Bumgarner. It was Arvdal who repeated as the state champion by a 15-8 decision. She finished the season with a perfect 43-0 record.
Addison said after her match what this win meant to her and what to expect in next season. "It just means that I am going to work twice as hard. I worked twice as hard last year to get here, and I know everyone is doing more in the offseason now, so I am going to do even more than that," said Arvdal.
Also at 235 pounds, Madelyn Tryon of Southwest faced JaLeigh Miller of Lyons-Decatur Northeast in the semifinals and defeated her by fall in 2:48. Tryon advanced to the championship match against Brooklyn Snyder of Bancroft-Roasalie and was able to earn the win via fall in 2:26. Tryon was crowned the state champion with a record of 49-3.

We spoke with Madelyn after her championship match about what it feels like to be a state champion. "It feels amazing. I have been working for this all four years," said Tryon. She also added, "I have put in the time and dedication just like many others have."
