Football is back, friends. And it is a wonderful thing. On Friday, August 21st, Wauneta-Palisade made the trip to Maxwell to begin the 2026 football season.

Wauneta-Palisade was playing 8-man football for the first time since 2019.

Around the midway point of the first quarter, Wauneta-Palisade was driving but a toss sweep went awry when Maxwell took the pitch. A couple of plays later, Maxwell fumbled it in Wauneta-Palisade territory, and the Broncos took it back over.

At the end of the first quarter, the two squads were tied.

ADVERTISEMENTS

With 10:12 to go in the second quarter, Wauneta-Palisade was able to score on a long drive capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by Wyatt Hilbert. The two-point conversion was good, and it was 8-0.

Maxwell answered with a touchdown of their own. Griffin Flock scored from 10 yards out on the ground. The extra point was good, and it was 8-7 in favor of Wauneta-Palisade with 8:28 to go before halftime.

With 2:04 to go in the half, Hilbert found Wiese on a 26-yard pass for a touchdown. The two-point conversion was good, and the Broncos led 16-7. That was the score heading to halftime.

The teams couldn’t get much going in the third quarter, and the score remained the same, 16-7.

The whole second half was that way. It was pretty much a game of field position and strong defense.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Wauneta-Palisade was able to seal the game with an interception by Aydan Baker with about 3:30 to go in the game. The Broncos got a couple of first downs and closed out the game.

We chatted with Wauneta-Palisade senior Kreyton Wiese after the game.
