Maywood-Hayes Center Wins Both Games at Southwest

Saturday afternoon, we had hoops action as Southwest played host to Maywood-Hayes Center's Girls and Boys Basketball Teams. The Wolves went home victorious in both games. Let's check out the recaps.

The girls matchup was an excellent battle that MHC ended up winning 57-48. The tempo of the game was excellent as both teams were able to get out in transition and get buckets. Southwest found themselves down 19-9 to start the second quarter. But they got the offense going in the first 3:30, going on a 9-3 run.

MHC countered with a nice run of their own, outscoring Southwest 15-7 to close the quarter. At halftime, the Wolves led 37-25.

The Roughriders and the Wolves continued to go back and forth. Heading to the final stanza, it was 49-40 in favor of MHC. With 3:27 to go in the game, Kyra Nelms found Atleigh Nelms on a nice pass, and Atleigh hit the layup, and it was 50-47.

The Wolves were strong against the run Southwest made, scoring a pair of layups to create a seven-point gap with 1:45 to go. They closed things out from there.

It was an excellent, hard-fought game from both of these teams.

Southwest was led by Aapen Billeter and her 17 points. Allison VanPelt, Kyra Nelms, and Atleigh Nelms had seven.

For Maywood-Hayes Center, Karissa Stengel had 21 points to lead the way. Kesli Cox scored nine points, Blayklee Farr scored 12, and Caylie Softley scored eight.

Both teams were balanced on offense.

In the boys game, it was all Maywood-Hayes Center as they won by a final tally of 62-29.

The Wolves caught fire in the first and never looked back. MHC hit seven, yes SEVEN, three-pointers in the first quarter. Kade Broz made four of them, Charlie Callis had two, and Jaxson Anders had one.

Southwest could find decent looks, but converting those looks into made baskets was a challenge. MHC led 23-7 going into the second.

The Wolves pressed forward in the second quarter, scoring 12 points while holding Southwest to nine. It was 35-16.

In the third quarter, scoring was hard to come by as both teams only scored five points, and it was 40-21 going to the fourth. In the final quarter, Southwest stayed within the 15-17 point deficit range, but later, the Wolves found the three-point line to be helpful again, making four of them.

The Wolves hit a total of 13 threes in the game.

Kade Broz led MHC with 18 points, all of them coming from the three-point line, Charlie Callis had 12, all of his points came from the three-point line, Keenan Richards had 12, and Jaxson Anders had 11 points.
