Arapahoe and MHC Both End Seasons In D1 Quarterfinals

In Class D1, #8 Arapahoe and #3 Maywood-Hayes Center were in action on Thursday, March 5th, at the NSAA Girls State Basketball Championships in Lincoln. Arapahoe started the day at Pinnacle Bank Arena, and Maywood-Hayes Center finished the day at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. We will start with the Warriors game first.

Arapahoe was the #8 seed and faced the undefeated #1 seed, Bloomfield. The Warriors lost to the Bees, 73-52. Bloomfield came out and dominated the first quarter. A big part of that was forcing turnovers and getting run-outs. In total, they forced 10 Arapahoe turnovers. Towards the end of the quarter, Arapahoe did knock down some shots, but Bloomfield led 26-11.

Bloomfield continued to find success on offense and defense. The Bees were shooting incredibly efficiently as well, at 55% from the field through two quarters. Arapahoe found a little momentum at the end of the second quarter as they went on a 7-4 run in the last four minutes. The Queen Bees led 45-20 at halftime.

Arapahoe did find success on offense in the third quarter, scoring 15 points, but still found themselves down 68-35 heading to the final quarter.


In the fourth quarter, late in the game, Bloomfield did allow Ruby McCune of Arapahoe to score a bucket. Ruby just got cleared to play basketball following an injury. A cool moment for Ruby, and excellent sportsmanship from the Queen Bees.


Bloomfield defeated Arapahoe 73-52.



Arapahoe was led by Sawyer Shafer with 19 points, four rebounds, and two steals; Suttyn Shafer had 10 points, four assists, and two steals; Clara Hilker had nine points and six rebounds; and Emma Strand added six rebounds.


Bloomfield was led by Madyson Mlady with 24 points, 13 rebounds, and four steals; Kennedy Mlady had 19 points, six rebounds, three steals, and 10 assists; Haley Eisenhauer had 13 points and four rebounds; and Aleah James added eight points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Arapahoe ends its season with a record of 21-6.


Bloomfield improved to 27-0 and advanced to Friday's semifinals, where they will face #5, Sutton at 6:00 P.M. CT at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

#3 Maywood-Hayes Center faced #6 Howells-Dodge in the final game of the day at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The Jaguars defeated the Wolves 51-28.

Howells-Dodge started on a big run, and at the 3:51 mark, Maywood-Hayes Center had to take a timeout. The Jaguars led 12-2. Howells-Dodge took control of the game and continued to get good looks. They led 17-5 heading to the second quarter.


The scoring was more even in the second quarter, with the Jaguars putting up 11 points and the Wolves 9. Howells-Dodge led 28-14 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Jaguars extended their lead to 20 points, 43-23, the score heading into the final period.


In the fourth quarter, the Jaguars closed out the game, winning 51-28 to move on.

Maywood-Hayes Center was led by Karissa Stengel with 10 points, and Caylie Softley had nine points, four rebounds, and three assists.


Howells-Dodge was led by Kylie Brichacek with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists; Brynn Throener with 12 points, three rebounds, and five assists; Kenadie Throener with eight points and six rebounds; and Bella Koliha with six points and three rebounds.


MHC ends its season with a record of 23-4.


Howells-Dodge improves to 20-7 and will advance to take on #2 Elm Creek on Friday at 7:45 P.M. CT at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
