Mission Accomplished: Dundy County Stratton Earns Their First-Ever Girls State Basketball Championship

On Saturday, March 8th, 2026, the #1 seed in Class D2, Dundy County Stratton, faced the #6 seed, Wynot, at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The teams were battling for the NSAA State Championship. Dundy County Stratton was looking to clinch its first state championship title, having finished runner-up in 2015, 2017, and 2019. The Tigers found success and earned the Class D2 State Championship by defeating Wynot, 49-39.

The Tigers started out with a 6-2 lead. Wynot, though, was able to counter and tie things up at 6-6. With about 3:00 to go in the first quarter. In the opening period, Abi Spargo took complete control for the Tigers, as she scored 8 points. Right as time was about to expire, Kimberly Escobar got a rebound off of a long missed three-pointer and put it off the glass for a layup and in. The Tigers forced six turnovers in the first quarter and led 12-9 heading to the second.



DCS continued to press forward as they led 17-9 with 6:24 to go in the half. Wynot took a timeout. The Blue Devils, though, wouldn’t go away. With 3:45 to go in the half, they trimmed the lead to 17-13. DCS maintained the lead, 21-16, heading into the half.

Wynot started the second half strong with a layup, forced turnover, and a three-pointer to tie things up at 21-21 about a minute in. At the 4:12 mark in the third, DCS led 23-21. Kenna Oligmueller from Wynot then hit a layup and was fouled. She hit the free throw, and the Blue Devils led 24-23 with about 4:00 to go. Wynot had the narrow lead heading to the final quarter, 30-29.

DCS came out of the quarter strong, going on a 7-1 run and leading 36-30. Abi Spargo picked up her fourth foul with about six minutes to go, so the Tigers had to play with her on the bench a little. Kimberly Escobar hit a monster three to give the Tigers a 40-30 lead with 4:45 to go. Unfortunately, Escobar ended up fouling out with about 3:00 left in the game. Ava Lutz knocked down some free throws to make it 46-37 late in the game. With under a minute to go, Abi Spargo had a big and one layup, and she knocked in the free throw to give the tigers a 10-point lead. DCS earned the 49-39 win.

Wynot was led by Kenna Oligmueller with 13 points and four rebounds; Haley Wieseler had 11 points, eight rebounds, and two steals; and Jaylin Geisen had six points and four steals.


Dundy County Stratton was led by Abi Spargo with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and seven steals; Clara Spargo had nine points, 10 rebounds, and two assists; Kimberly Escobar had nine points, five rebounds, two assists, and three steals; and Emily Schack had seven points, four rebounds, and three assists.

Wynot earned its 6th state runner-up title (2010, 2015, 2017, 2023, and 2024). The Blue Devils finished their season with a record of 18-12.


Dundy County Stratton earned their first-ever championship and finished the year with a record of 28-1.
