Hello, football, welcome back. I'm always grateful for a little "break" from coverage during the summer. But after about two weeks, I'm ready to get back to it. But with a long wait, the fall season feels that much sweeter.
We have a week zero game this season, as Maxwell will host Wauneta-Palisade on Friday at 7:00 P.M. CT.
Let's begin with Maxwell. They went 5-4 last season and made the playoffs once again. This year, they have a number of spots to fill, but they return four players on offense and three on defense with starting experience. Following a three-year starter, Jesse Reyes, who had an excellent career for Maxwell, the quarterback position has to be filled. Sophomore Tayton Phillips could be at that spot for the Wildcats. He played in six games last year and was 2-3 with 48 yards and a touchdown.
Running back is another position for the Wildcats to figure out as well. Junior Brison Brewer might be at that position as he had 51 yards last season. Junior Griffin Flock and senior Jagger Kleewein will be important pieces to the Wildcat offense. Flock had 242 yards receiving and four touchdowns, and Jagger Kleewein had 131 yards rushing and 246 yards receiving and four touchdowns.
ADVERTISEMENTS
On defense, there are a number of unknowns. But Kleewein returns as the leading tackler with 46 tackles.
They are in the D3-6 District with Anselmo-Merna, Brady, Mullen, Sandhills Valley, and Sandhills Thedford.
For the Broncos, we know the athletes, but now they are playing 8-man football. This is the first time since 2019. So talk about the preparations being hard for Maxwell. I'm excited to see the ground game for Wauneta-Palisade. Senior Kreyton Wiese is one of the best running backs in the RPAC. In his career, he's at nearly 2,700 rushing yards and 51 touchdowns. He has a good-sized frame: 6'2, 205 pounds, and in 8-man football, naturally, there are more defenders to evade. Wiese, though, I think, will still be a big-time running back.
ADVERTISEMENTS
On defense, David Bryner returns as a key stopper. The senior had 77 tackles last season.
Wauneta-Palisade is in the D3-7 District with Bayard, Hyannis, Sutherland, and Dundy County Stratton.
This is a really interesting matchup between these squads, I can't wait to see how it unfolds.
