Alma Wins a Pair at Hitchcock County on Friday

The Alma Cardinals made the trek to Trenton on Friday evening for a matchup against the Hitchcock County Falcons. 


In the girls game, Alma won 74-17.


In the opening quarter, just about a minute in, Alma went up 6-2. Hitchcock County took a timeout to try and regroup. The Cardinals, though, kept rolling and took a big lead at the end of the first quarter, 35 -6. The Cardinals kept the defensive pressure on in the second quarter, continuing to score and rebound at a high level. Along with that, they were forcing a number of turnovers.

Alma led at halftime 65-11. Both teams were able to bring in a number of different players to get playing time.


Going to the fourth quarter, Alma led 70-17. In the fourth quarter, scoring was not as frequent, and the Cardinals closed out the game.


For Hitchcock County, Asia Homma had four points, Jayda Wood had four, and Kalissa Hagan had three. Hitchcock County is 5-8 and will face Sutherland on the road on Saturday, January 17th.


Unofficially, for Alma, Kinley Ford had 27 points and six three-pointers. Kamryn Scott had 12 points. Vayden Epp had seven, Kamri Neal had six, and Tierston Moore had six. The Cardinals hit 10 three-pointers. Alma is now 14-1 and will play at home versus Elm Creek on Tuesday, January 20th.



In the boys game, Alma won 66-58. Alma started on a 7-0 run before Adam Kisker of the Falcons hit a three-pointer with about 4:40 seconds to go in the first quarter. There wasn’t much more scoring in the quarter at the end of the period, though Tucker Biskup hit a three-pointer at the buzzer. We went to the second quarter with Alma leading 10-6.

In the second quarter, the action was fast-paced and physical. Alma had an eight-point lead until Tekoa Hazlitt hit a three-pointer at the buzzer. It was 28 to 23 at the intermission.

Hitchcock County started the half with a pair of three-pointers to take a 29-28 lead in the first minute. Halfway through the third, the teams traded three-pointers, and the game was entertaining. The matchup remained close, Alma having a narrow lead heading to the fourth quarter, 43-42.

In the opening minute of the fourth quarter, Jack Baker hits a three-pointer to put Hitchcock County up 45 to 43. Alma answered with a Grady Faimon layup with an and-one opportunity; he hit the free throw, and Alma reclaimed the lead 46 to 45. The teams continued to exchange buckets in the period. Alma, though, was able to hang on and get the 66 to 58 victory with some big shots and free throws.

Unofficially, Tucker Biskup had 30 points for Alma. Biskup became Alma's All-Time leading scorer as well during this game. He was 13-13 from the free throw line. As a team, Alma was 21-23 from the charity stripe. Zavier Mitchell had 15, and Grady Faimon totaled nine. The Cardinals are 13-1 and will face Elm Creek on Tuesday, the 20th, at home.


Unofficially for Hitchcock County, Jack Baker had 11 points, Adam Kisker had 15, Jayce Hauxwell had 11, and Tekoa Hazlitt had nine. Hitchcock County is now 6-6 and will face Sutherland on the road, Saturday, January 17th.
