Southern Valley and Hi-Line Split Matchups Thursday Night

On Thursday, December 11th, Hi-Line hosted Southern Valley in Elwood for some basketball action. The teams split the matchups as Southern Valley won the girls game and Hi-Line took the boys game.
In the girls matchup, Southern Valley won by a final score of 39-15. In the first quarter, neither team could get much going on offense, but Southern Valley led 8-3. In the second period, the Eagles got things rolling, scoring 17 points and holding the Bulls to five.

Southern Valley led at halftime, 25-8. In the third quarter, Southern Valley increased its lead to 31-13 heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Southern Valley closed out the game by outscoring Hi-Line 8-2 to secure the win.
We chatted with Tori Bose of Southern Valley after the game about the win.
Whitney Wall scored four points for Hi-Line, Olivia Wall scored three, Bentley Stubbs had two, and Shelby Jurjens added three. Hi-Line is 1-3 and will play at Gothenburg on Saturday.
Tori Bose finished with 15 points, Emercen Lovitt scored eight, Mikah Schultz had five, and Lauren Quinn added six. Southern Valley is 1-3 and will face Overton at home on Saturday.
Bose was named Player of the Game as well.
In the boys game, we had a thriller of a matchup. Hi-Line won the game, 49-47. In the opening quarter, both teams found success on offense, and Southern Valley led 16-15.
The second quarter was similar as the teams traded buckets once again, and it was all tied up at 29-29.
Throughout the game, it was physical, with both teams running effective offensive actions, and rebounding was critical.

In the third quarter, Southern Valley got tough on defense and took a 40-33 lead heading into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, the intensity increased further. About halfway through the period, Isaac Hamilton hit a big three-pointer to increase the lead to 47-40 and get him past the 1,000 career points milestone.
About a minute later, a pair of free throws were missed by the Eagles, and Hi-Line pushed the ball up the floor, and Brody Diefenbaugh hit a trailing triple to make the score 47-43. The teams traded defensive stops for a couple of minutes.
With 17 seconds to go, Kane Cochrane hit a three from about the volleyball 10-foot line and made it 47-46. On the ensuing inbounds pass, Diefenbaugh stole the ball, got fouled, and hit both free throws to make it 48-47.
Southern Valley hustled across the midcourt line and called a timeout. The Bulls forced a 5-second violation as the Eagles could not get it inbounded. Diefenbaugh was fouled again, and he hit one of two foul shots to make it 49-47.

Southern Valley had a chance, as Houston Hunt had a nice look at the rim from three, an excellent-looking shot from the right corner, rimmed out.
Really, really good effort from both teams.

For Hi-Line, Kane Cochrane scored 15 points, Brody Diefenbaugh had 15 too, Cooper Knackstedt had seven, Jaxson Hood added eight. Hi-Line is 3-1 and will play at Gothenburg on Saturday.
Cochrane was named Player of the Game.
