Southwest and Hi-Line Split Games on Tuesday Evening

Southwest made the trip to Elwood to play against the Hi-Line Bulls in a girls and boys doubleheader.


In the girls game, Southwest used a lot of pressure to get an 80-48 win.  Southwest started on an 8-0 run in the first 2:30 of the game. Hi-Line cut the lead down 8-4. But Southwest put its foot on the gas and got its offense going.


They led 25-6 at the end of the first quarter. Southwest kept up its strong play in the second quarter. Leading 49-14 at halftime.

In the second half, Hi-Line was able to get some shots to fall. They did outscore Southwest in the third quarter, 22-19. The Roughriders were hitting shots too, and it was 68-36 heading to the final quarter. The offenses continued to play well each scoring 12 points in the final period. 


For Hi-Line, Olivia Wall and Bentley Stubbs led the scoring for Hi-Line with 14 and 11 points. The Bulls are 2-9 and will face Alma on the road on Thursday, then travel to Arapahoe on Friday.


Unofficially, Southwest was paced by Anikka Nelms, who had a big game with 30 points, and Aspen Billeter with 24 points. Billeter had a number of big defensive plays, too. Southwest is 7-6 and will play Bertrand at home on Friday.

In the boys game, it was a battle, and Hi-Line won 45-42. In the opening quarter, offense was hard to come by. Our first bucket of the game didn’t come till the 2:47 mark when Houston Billeter banked in a three-pointer.

Southwest led at the end of the first quarter, 6-5. In the second quarter, Hi-Line took a 12-9 lead with 5:42 to go in the half, and a timeout was taken by Southwest. Scoring remained low in the first half, and Hi-Line led 16-13 at halftime. 


Hi-Line started the second half on a 7-0 run to go up by 10, 23-13. Brody Diefenbaugh and Houston Billeter traded three-pointers in the third quarter early on. The offense picked up a little bit more in the third quarter. Hi-Line led 32-26 heading to the fourth.

In the final period, Diefenbaugh hit some big three-pointers to keep the Bulls ahead. Three free throws with 1:53 left in the game by Billeter tied the game up at 42-42. Houston Billeter put up a shot from near the volleyball 10-foot line with 1.7 seconds to go to tie it up, but it rimmed out. 


For the Bulls, Brody Diefenbaugh had 21 points, and Cooper Knackstedt had 15 points. Hi-Line is 6-5 and will play at Alma on Thursday and go to Arapahoe on Friday.


Unofficially for the Roughriders, Houston Billeter had 28 points. Deric Kelley had eight points. For Southwest, they are now 5-8 and will face Bertrand at home on Friday. Deric Kelley had eight points.
